KUPWARA (WASIM MAJNOON MIR): The tall claims of the successive governments regarding health care may be theoretically sound but in practicality they are in shambles, as common masses of rural areas here in Kupwara district of north Kashmir suffer badly due to infrastructure, lacks Staff, basic facilities and other. The primary issue at the Kupwara hospital, which on papers is a Community Health Centre (CHC), but has been named as District Hospital. 

The practice of Unani doctors to prescribe English medicine is taking toll in Kupwara Community Health Centre with people turning aghast over the issue and also the unani doctors running casualty (EMERGENCY SERVICES) in kupwara hospital.

According to JKupdate Correspondent, One of the senior doctor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the hospital is in a dilapidated condition and it was becoming difficult for the management to run it.

“Without proper staff, we are not able to cope with the patient rush. We have over 1300 OPD’s daily,” He added that due lack of health care facilities in the hospital they often face flak from the patients and their attendants. “But, what can we do when we lack facilities here? We are compelled to make referrals. Only patients and doctors are sufferers of this mismanagement”. The Kupwara Hospital at present has no pediatrician and the doctors at the hospital refer such patients to Srinagar hospitals – which are located 100 kilometers away.

One another senior doctors, on condition of anonymity claimed that the hospital authority failed to make a toilet and Night rooms for doctors even for the patients at the causality; we are facing a lot here. He added that Lack of cleanliness is another problem faced by the hospital, more than a year they changed bed sheet and other.

They said that the staff of the hospital arrives late in the morning and during lunch break to perform their duties. They alleged that despite heavy flow of patients in OPD, most of the Doctors and paramedical staff arrives and leave during morning and lunch time at their own will.

Meanwhile non-availability of medicines adds to the miseries, inhabitants said. They added that the doctors prescribe only those medicines which are available with the chemists commissioned with these doctors.

Patients said that due to the acute medicine shortage in the hospital, the patients are told to buy them from the market. "The bulk of the medicines is supplied to the hospital stores but patients are suggested to buy these medicine from the market," said one of the attendant.

A Poor female patient from Lolab valley said that she had come for treatment in the hospital where she was asked to get USG done from the outside as the staff was not available in the hospital.

When contacted with chief medical officer Kupwara, Dr Prahlad Singh said, “We will never tolerate those employees who will not turn up on time. We will definitely take action against the erring employees if found guilty”.
