NEW DELHI: A Kashmiri student who went missing from an engineering college in Dehradun has joined a militant outfit, the police confirmed on Monday. Shoaib Lone, the Kashmiri student who was doing engineering from Dehradun’s Alpine Institute, left Dehradun on September 20. While he left the college campus saying that he had a flight to Srinagar, from Chandigarh, he never reached Srinagar.

“He was studying at Alpine Institute since 2016 & was supposed to return here in August but didn't. When his mother was contacted she said he isn't at home as well. She suspects that he has joined a terrorist organisation, “ ADG (law & order) said. According to a report, Lone, 21, a Btech (IT) student, was raised by his mother. His father was a militant and was killed in the early nineties- the report said citing an SP ranking officer. According to the report, the family learnt about the matter only after a photograph of Lone surfaced on social media.

“We came to know about his joining militancy after officials from security agencies inquired about him. When we enquired about him at his house, they said his mother was ill due to which he couldn’t return... However, on September 19, he returned to the institute but left within a day saying his mother is seriously ill and he has a flight from Chandigarh for Srinagar...,” Alpine Institute of Management and Technology (AIMT) director was quoted as saying.

His mother, a resident of Bumrath village in Kashmir’s Kulgam, has made an emotional video appealing that her son is sent back to her.
