SAMBA: With the polling for third phase of the four-phase civic bodies elections concluding on Saturday evening, the election process for all 37 urban local bodies of the Jammu division was completed. In the fourth and final phase on October 16, the elections will be held only for civic bodies in Kashmir.

The whole region from Hindu-majority plains of Samba, Kathua and Jammu to the Muslim-dominated mountainous belts of Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban, people of the division kept their tryst with democracy. Udhampur and Reasi districts also registered heavy polling.

Braving terror threats and defying boycott, the Jammu region registered 68.4 per cent polling in three phases of civic bodies elections with some Muslim-dominated areas, such as Thanamandi, creating history by over 90 per cent polling.

Of the total 79 urban local bodies in the state, 37 in the Jammu region, including the Jammu municipal corporation with 75 wards, went to the polls. Of the total 1,145 wards, the Jammu region has 521 with 6,44,568 voters. Of the total 2,990 candidates, 2,137 were in the fray in the region only. While 231 candidates were elected unopposed in Kashmir, only 13 were chosen in Jammu without any contest.

Although the PDP and the NC have boycotted the poll process, it had no impact in the Jammu region.

Although the Panthers Party is also in the fray, the real contest is between the BJP and its archrival Congress in the Jammu region. The PDP and NC have also fielded proxy candidates in many areas.(TNS)
