JAMMU: SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital treated a patient with palpitations through radio frequency ablation. A 30 year old patient, housewife from Udhampur was suffering from severe palpitations, with heart rate reaching uptil 250 beats per minute, on many occasions. She came to the Hospital for treatment in the month of October. In such cases the medicines help control the abnormal heart tissue that causes arrhythmias but the radio frequency ablation destroys the tissue.

Palpitationis a sensation of heart skipping a beat or adding an extra beat. They can be quite a distressing experience and sometimes life threatening as well. They cause severe discomfort and sometimes collapse too. Symptoms can range from chest pain, pounding in chest and neck, dizziness, loss of consciousness, and shortness of breath.  Palpitations are commonly due to electrical problems in the heart and these electrical problems sometimes respond well to medical treatment.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Vivek Chaturvedi said, “In the index case, the episodes would last for hours sometimes and make her very uncomfortable and dizzy. In certain situation she required emergency injections and sometimes even painful electric shock. After initial injections and shock therapy, we recommended her to go for Radio frequency Ablation (RFA) which is a permanent solution”.

The procedure which is similar to angiography involves insertion of electric sensing catheters in to the heart chambers under X ray guidance for the source of the electric problem to belocated. Once the problem is diagnosed, special heat emitting catheters called Ablation catheter are used to cause targeted damage to the abnormal electrical connection within the heart resulting in permanent cure.

Dr (Brig) Man Mohan Harjai said, “Radiofrequency Ablation as a treatment procedure not only comes as a relief for patients suffering from palpitations but also as a boon for healthcare sector as a whole”.

Radiofrequency Ablation is a very safe procedure, highly effective and does not require prolonged post-surgery care. The index patient is off all medicines and has had no palpitations since the treatment. She is very happy and has resumed her normal daily life.
