  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is gearing up to recommend to the Election Commission that it conduct Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir along with the national elections scheduled for the first half of next year.

NEW DELHI: Keeping in view the logistics required in terms of deployment of security forces, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is gearing up to recommend to the Election Commission that it conduct Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir along with the national elections scheduled for the first half of next year.

Sharing the views of the ministry on conducting fresh elections to the J&K Assembly, dissolved on November 21 by Governor Satya Pal Malik, senior officials at the MHA said they are going to have a series of consultation meetings in the days to come with the EC on issues relating to conducting the General Election, scheduled for sometime in March-April next year.

During such meetings, the officials of MHA and poll panel will finalise deployment of the Central forces all over the country, including the troubled state, where security remains a top concern.

“During those interactions, we are going to propose to the EC to hold Assembly elections in J&K around the Lok Sabha polls, as it will be easy for us to mobilise Central forces to the state,” said a senior MHA official.

He added that it would certainly be easier to re-locate paramilitary forces from neighbouring Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the state once the General Election is completed in these states. “If not with the Lok Sabha elections, then we will have to make special arrangements, which would be

more time-consuming and involve a higher financial cost also,” he added.

Even the EC is reported to have said that Assembly polls in J&K will be held within the next six months, as it did not rule out the possibility of holding polls in the state around the time the 2019 Lok Sabha election is conducted.
