NEW DELHI: Just a day after the Indian bowlers created history by picking up the most wickets in a calendar year in the history of Indian cricket, the pace troika of Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, and Mohammed Shami scripted a world record for themselves. The three combined to become the most successful pace troika in a calendar year in Test cricket. They achieved the milestone on the fourth day of the fourth Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Bumrah, Shami and Ishant combined to pick 131 wickets between themselves in 2018 as they broke a 34-year-old record which was previously held by legendary West Indies trio of Joel Garner, Michael Holding and Malcolm Marshall. The Windies greats had picked 130 wickets in 1984. They are followed by South African pace trio of Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn who had snared 123 wickets in 2008.

Breaking down 131 wickets between themselves - Bumrah finished with 46 wickets in nine Tests, Shami picked a similar number of wickets from 12 matches, while Ishant finished with 39 from 11. Bumrah, who had made his Test debut earlier this year against South Africa, has been the best out of the Indian bowlers.

Earlier on day 3, the Indian bowling combination of nine regular bowlers and one part-time bowler combined to break the nations 39-year-old record. In 2018, the bowlers scalped a record 257 wickets in 14 wickets, hence overhauling the group of bowlers from the year 1979 that had picked 237 wickets from 17 matches.

Day 3 was also a bit of a special day for Bumrah, who has finished his first innings with a career-best and record-breaking figure of six for 33. The brilliant effort made him the most successful Indian bowler in debut Test year and the Indian bowler with most wickets in a year in the format.
