Police officer martyred,3 militants killed in Kulgam encounter

SRINAGAR: A police officer was on Sunday martyred and 3 militants killed in an encounter with militants in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The gun battle is underway.

Three terrorists were killed by security forces in an encounter in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, while a Deputy Superintendent of Police lost his life while fighting militants. The DSP has been identified as Aman Thakur. 

Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Turigam area of Kulgam district following information about presence of some militants there, a police official said. He said the militants opened fire on security forces, who retaliated, triggering a gun-battle. 

Deputy Superintendent of Police Aman Thakur was martyred in the exchange of fire, a Jammu and Kashmir police official said.

Taking to Twitter, police had earlier said, “Exchange of fire at Turigam, Kulgam. Security forces on job. Details will follow.”

On Friday, two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Baramulla district. A J&K police spokesperson said that based on inputs about the presence of militants in Warapora, a Cordon and Search Operation was jointly launched by police and security forces in the area.

“As searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the militants. The security forces retaliated leading to a gunfight,” police said.
