Kansal inaugurates rafting championship at Reasi

JAMMU: Principal Secretary Planning Development and Monitoring Department, Rohit Kansal, inaugurated the 4th National White Water River Rafting Championship in Reasi today.

The championship is being organised by Directorate of Tourism, Jammu on Chenab River at Baradari, Reasi from March 15 to 17. Deputy Commissioner Reasi, Indu Kanwal Chib and Director Tourism, Jammu, OP Bhagat was also present at the event.

In order to promote Adventure Tourism in the region, the event was organized wherein 13 teams registered and put their boats into river for getting themselves acclimatized with cold Chenab water and prepare well for the challenge. 

The day's race was conducted on a stretch of 12 kilometres- from Baradari, Reasi to Dera Baba Banda Bahadur.  The event culminated with bonfire and musical evening at TRC, Baradari, Reasi.

The purpose of organising this event was to promote Adventure Tourism in District Reasi which has a number of scenic places and landscapes providing lot of opportunities for such activities. This, in addition to providing employment opportunities for unemployed youth associated directly or indirectly with these activities.   

Kansal said that such activities at frequent intervals would give due publicity to the other tourist resorts in the vicinity like Bhimgarh Fort; Reasi, Dera Baba Banda Bahadur; Siarh Baba and Shiv Khori in district Reasi.

Director Tourism said that the Directorate is receiving number of applications from youths interested in starting similar adventure activities like Paragliding, Zorbing, Zip-lining, Trekking, Hiking and other activities in the region.

Among others present were Deputy Director Tourism, Ansuya Jamwal, Assistant Director Tourism Katra, Umesh Shan and officials from the Directorate of Tourism, Jammu.
