Distt Admi, Leh celebrates success of the Cafe Sales Outlet

LEH: District Administration, Leh together with the implementing agency LEDeG celebrates the success of the Cafe_Sales Outlet-Cum-First_All-Weather public toilet.

Conjoined with a cafe and a sales outlet, this aesthetic & hygeinic public toilet has been built in an eco-friendly way, using local architectural method with insulated walls and mud plaster. Most importantly, it has been designed to function throughout the year. Besides, ramp access has also been provided to make it differently abled friendly.

Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Avny Lavasa (IAS) who was the Chief guest on the occasion, while interacting with the gathering congratulated the general public and applauded the executing agencies MCL, LEDeG and BORDA for effective implementation of the project and for coming up with the amazing architectural design. She also conveyed her gratitude to the LEDeG for providing additional financial support under their project "Livable Leh".

"The idea was to change the common perception that public toilets are poorly maintained & unhygienic, and to provide an all-weather public toilet to the general public especially during the peak winter months when temperatures dip below freezing point", she added.

Additional District Dev. Commissioner, Moses Kunzang while expressing happiness over the success of this eco-friendly and all-weather public toilet, informed that although this public toilet was made functional since Dec 2018 but formal inauguration was kept withheld so that it's functioning in the peak winter season could be tested and our real pupose of dedicating a sustainable senitation facility to the general public could be achieved.

Giving further information, the ADDC added that to make these public toilets a sustainable model in the long run, the user fee collected from the washrooms and income generated from the cafe & sales outlets will be utilized for it's maintenance.

Sachin Kumar IAS, Addl. DC, Leh, District officers, representatives from the NGOs/media freternity, school children, and a large number of people were also present on the occasion.

Director SECMOL & Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, Sonam Wangchuk was also present on the occasion as a special guest.

In order to know the suggestions & feedback of general masses, a question & answer session was also held in which valuable suggestions were put across and a number of questions were asked to which the DC responded with appropriate answers.

An educative skit depicting the importance of public toilets and nuisance of defecating in open was also presented.
